Impressive oil on panel painting of Saint Peter depicting a rooster, the overlapping keys and an open book in a rocky landscape. In Catholic art the roosters represents St. Peter’s threefold denial of Christ, it is also a symbol for his remorse and repentance upon hearing the rooster’s crows. The keys represent authority as the leader of the twelve apostles as Jesus entrusted him the keys to the kingdom of heaven. The book being the head of the early Church, the first Pope responsible for spreading the Gospel. This artwork has no visible signature mounted in a gilt wood frame. In good condition with traces of wear, fine aging cracks to painting, some patina to frame and other details consistent to age.  Kindly refer to the images as integral part of the descriptions. I do my best to provide photos that honestly reflect the character of the piece. Actual colors may vary slightly from photos. An ideal size that will add statement to a charming interior.
